Dachshund is the original name, it is a dog breed. In German it means “badger dog” and refers to the original function that was to hunt badgers.

The Dachshund Dog is well known for having a long body, wide chest and short legs. Its physical characteristics make it a unique and fun dog. Its peculiar appearance is due to a genetic mutation known as bassetism, which produces short limbs in relation to body size. His nickname “dachshund” describes him very well.

They have a long snout, dark eyes, sharp ears and long ears. Depending on its size and weight it can be classified as standard, miniature and Kaninchen, the latter can only be classified after the year completed. In addition the Dachshund differs in the type of hair, it can be hard hair, short hair and long hair.

The Germans perfected the breed between the 15th and 17th centuries. The French Bracke and the German Pinscher were probably used to create a dog strong and bold enough to handle a badger and hide easily.

Selective breeding of long hair and straight hair resulted in the variety of long hair we know today. The variety of hard hair was a more recent development, probably the result of the crossing of the long-haired Pinscher and the Dandie Dinmont Terrier.

Physical appearance

The body of the Dachshund is elongated and much larger to its extremities, Dolichocephalon (snout longer than the skull), short legs, drooping ears (naturally).

There are three varieties, according to the thoracic circumference measured at the age of 15 months, Standard Dachshund, Miniature Dachshund, Kaninchen Dachshund.

Each of the size varieties can have three types of hair, Dachshund short hair, Dachshund long hair, Dachshund hard hair.

Temperament

Despite its size, the Dachshund is known for its brave nature. As a family dog, the Dachshund is a loyal companion and a good watchdog. They are good dogs with children if they treat them well. These dogs are very playful and friendly with their own, but they have a very strong impulse to prey so they tend to chase and attack small animals.

Health

The Dachshund does not require complicated care, although it can present problems related to his spine, because it is so long. They should not be supercharged as this breed tends to gain weight quickly. As with the rest of dog breeds, it is best to follow regular veterinary reviews

These dogs require moderate exercise, so they adapt well to life in apartments or small houses. However, they can cause some problems with neighbors because they tend to be barking if such behavior is not corrected. However, it is known that these dogs, with a correct sports education, would not present problems. Especially if they enjoy large spaces where they can run and jump freely.

The very agile Dachshund, however, due to their short legs they do not reach high speeds. In general it is a dog that is not prone to diseases as long as the owner takes good care at the time of illness.
