Some dogs are built for hard work–like Siberian Huskies–and some are made for a life on a comfy couch and warm blankets, like American Bulldogs. Whatever they’re built for, I think we can agree every dog is a very good boy (or girl)!

This article is about the cutest dog breeds that make fantastic companions to their owners, both young and old. They’re loyal, cuddly, and they make excellent work colleagues for everyone who’s working remotely! These pups also offer the wiggliest tails and warmest hugs for those returning home from a day in the office or the classroom.

Get ready to smile–and maybe even giggle–at these ADORABLE dogs!

Yorkshire Terrier

These little guys are also known as “Yorkies.” They’re super popular in the United States because they’re hypoallergenic and easy to housebreak. They’re also brilliant! Don’t let their petite frames fool you–they’ve got an immense capacity for learning new tricks!

Samoyed

Samoyeds are gentle, friendly, and devoted family dogs. Sometimes they can get a little strong-willed, but that usually means they need a nice, long walk. These guys will keep you stocked up on cuddles, and they’ll get you out of the house and into nature!

Boston Terrier

Boston Terriers are nicknamed “The American Gentleman.” There’s a good reason for that! These little guys have the friendliest glow in their big round eyes, and they’re known for wearing little tuxedo jackets and moving with a confident rhythmic step. If you love to bring your dog along on outdoor adventures or an afternoon at a dog-friendly cafe, a Boston Terrier will make a great companion for you!

Golden Retreiver

Golden Retrievers can be goofy, playful, and friendly, but they’re also known for learning multiple skills! They can carry your water bottle and snacks in a backpack on long hikes by day and cuddle up on your lap to watch a movie by night. These guys are known as some of the best family dogs around.

Dachshund

Cairn Terrier

Cairn Terriers were initially bred to hunt foxes from their dens in Scotland. For this reason, these dogs love to run around their yards or join their owners on hikes across any landscape. Australian Shepherd

Australian Shepherds, also known as “Aussies,” are not actually from Australia! They’re originally from Spain. They got their name from Spaniards who brought their dogs with them to Australia and then to the United States. Whatever their history, Aussies are high in energy and intelligence, which makes them fun, hardworking, and friendly pets. They also make excellent assistance dogs.

Bichon Frise

Bichon Frises are some of the happiest and most enthusiastic companions around. The more attention you give to these guys, the more love you get in return! Bichons are cheerful, and they love mischief almost as much as they love, well, love! They have a lot of that to give! They also basically look like toys with their black eyes and fluffy white coats. So, if you bring one into your life, get ready for every single passerby to comment on “how cute!” your dog is!

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels just seem to get it. When they look at you, you assume they know more about life than you do, and you’d be wise to let them lead the way! These dogs have a sweet, gentle, melting expression. They also have large, round, soulful eyes. These guys get along with children and other dogs, and they adapt beautifully to the lifestyles of their owners. If you want to hang out on the couch, this dog will be sitting right next to you. Conversely, if you’re more active, you’ve got a hiking companion for life!

Pug

Wrinkly faces, curly tails, and great big smiles! Pugs often reflect the moods of their owners. So, if their owner is feeling upbeat and energetic, Pugs will also exhibit this energy. If their owners are quiet and broody, Pugs tends to be chill and laid back. These guys make fantastic family dogs as they’re loyal, loving, and easy-going, as well as being protective of those within their household.

Labrador Retreiver

To know a Labrador Retriever is to love a Labrador Retriever. These dogs have made the “most popular dog” list for 28 years in a row! Not only are they easygoing, affectionate, and energetic, but they’re also family-friendly for all ages. These good boys are equally happy on the couch or in the field. Be sure to take them on daily walks and you’ll have a friend for life!

Havanese

Havanese make wonderful lap dogs. They also boast a low-shedding coat, which is great for allergy sufferers! These dogs make excellent family dogs with their sparkling personalities and loyal willingness to please their owners. Also of note is their ability to learn multiple new tricks and be trained as assistance dogs.

Pomsky

Pomskies are a designer breed of dog; a hybrid of the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. Not only are they fluffy with beautiful eyes, regardless of the color, they’re also playful, intelligent, and very loyal!

Dalmation

Dalmations are beautiful to behold! Originally, they were bred to guard horses and coaches, and some of the old protective instinct remains. These guys are generally reserved and dignified, and they can be aloof with strangers, which makes them dependable watchdogs. With their humans, however, Dalmations are loyal and loving house dogs.

Chiweenie

A cross between the Chihuahua and Dachshund, Chiweenies are small in stature but mighty in personality. These pups will keep you on your toes with their lively energy and their willingness to alert you to any potential dangers. They’ll also love you unconditionally. That’s a lot of gifts to come in such a small package!

Brussels Griffon

The Brussels Griffon was bred for vermin control and companionship: win-win! Besides being super helpful around the house, these little dogs are also active and intelligent. When they’re trained with patience and love, they make excellent companions!

Papillion

Papillons and Toy Poodles are often touted as the most intelligent and trainable of the toy breeds. These little furry friends are spirited and athletic, which makes them top-notch competition dogs in a very small package!

Shetland Sheep Dog

Shetland Sheep Dogs, also known as Shelties, are originally herders from Scotland’s remote and rugged Shetland Islands. These small dogs are active and agile herders–they’re also sensitive and affectionate. They’re so sensitive, they’re known to be highly in tune with the mood of their household!

Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus are renowned for their friendly, perky, happy temperaments. They generally get along well with people of all ages and with other dogs as well as other pets of different species. These little bundles of fur and joy have a big desire to be with people, whether that is sitting on their peoples’ laps or taking a walk through the park.

Whoodle

Whoodles, as you may have guessed, are a hybrid of Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier and a Poodle. These dogs are usually friendly and fun-loving, and they get along particularly well with children. Whoodles need a lot of exercise and playtime to keep their brilliant minds engaged in positive activities!

Cockapoo

A cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Miniature Poodle, Cockapoos are bred for their temperament, as opposed to their appearance. That being said, we think they’re some of the cutest dogs around! These guys tend to inherit the loving and friendly natures common with both parent breeds. They’re also highly intelligent and easy to train.

English Setter

The English Setter is mild-mannered and sensitive and loves to both give and receive affection–they’re very sociable dogs. They’re also known for their friendliness, loyalty to family, and gentle demeanor. English Setters are quintessential family dogs!

French Bulldog

French Bulldogs, or Frenchies, were first bred in England. In the mid-1800s, however, they ended up in France when many of the lace workers from the Nottingham region went to France for work. These women took their “Toy” Bulldogs with them and the rest is history. To this day, Frenchies remain entertaining home companions. They’re lapdogs who are also alert, which makes them good watchdogs.

Beagle

Beagles are friendly, intelligent pack dogs that thrive on the company of people and other dogs. They have an easy-going demeanor but love a good hike through the woods where their moderate build enables them to nimbly traverse rough terrain. We’ve never met a Beagle we didn’t love.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are quick and quick-witted! Also known as “Corgis,” these little guys have active minds and bodies. They love daily physical and mental exercise, and they’re known for being willing to please, amiable, and companionable. Corgis are good with children they know but can be reserved with strangers.

Bernese Mountain Dog

Bernese Mountain Dogs are easygoing, calm family companions. These big guys are sensitive, devoted, gentle with children, and often reserved with strangers. Because they love their families so much, they don’t do well isolated from family activities. They’ve also been known to make excellent therapy dogs.

Pomeranian

Pomeranians are like squishy little stuffed animals. Well, stuffed animals if those were bouncy, bold, and very busy. Most people don’t realize these little fluffy pups were bred to be miniature sled dogs. For this reason, they love a good exercise session . . . if they don’t get enough of those, they can choose to indulge in a good ol’ fashion barking session instead. Either way, they sure are adorable!

German Shepherd

German Shepherds first came to the United States after soldiers who came in contact with them during World War I spoke so highly of them. Ever since they’ve been known as keenly intelligent and loyal companions. It is because of their intelligence they’re often trained for military service, search and rescue, and police dogs. To their families, however, German Shepards are known as loving and gentle pets.

Airdale Terrier

Airdale Terriers are also known as the “The King of Terriers,” and for good reason! These dogs are excellent hunters, athletes, and companions. Airedales, like their smaller cousins in the terrier family, can be bold, determined, and stubborn. They’re also docile and patient with kids but won’t back down when protecting their family and home.

Rottweiler

Rottweilers, or “Rotties,” are chunky bundles of cuddliness! Male Rottweilers tend to be calm and ever on duty, watching for threats to their home and family, but females are a little more docile and affectionate. Either way, Rotties are all about love and they respond very well to consistent training.

Toy Poodle

Toy Poodles are basically where all the designer “Doodles” began. Labradoodles, Goldendoodles–they’re all adorable! Toy Poodles are misunderstood by some who assume they’re too pretty to be counted among real athletes in the dog world. Poodles are eager, athletic, and wickedly smart. They’re not just “toys”–they’re substantial dogs with steady character and intelligence!

Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies are friendly with dogs! They’re not really one-person dogs, which means they’re friendly, gentle, and not overly suspicious of strangers. They tend to do very well with other dogs while also keeping their families entertained. These dogs make great companions and are super intelligent and love to please their humans!

Bullmastiff

Bullmastiffs are a cross between Bulldogs and Mastiffs. As such, they’re fearless at work and docile at home. These guys are large when full-grown, and they are highly loyal to their families. They make excellent guard dogs and companions!

Weimaraner

Weimaraners have always been head-turners thanks to their beautiful silver coats and striking blue eyes! Weimaraners are courageous, friendly, and obedient dogs who are highly energetic and affectionate. These guys are also excellent guard dogs who love their families. They love to be right by your side—always within petting range!

Great Dane

Great Danes are the epitome of gentle giants. Though they look intimidating and imposing, they’re actually one of the best-natured dogs around. Great Danes are affectionate, sweet pets. They love to play and are gentle with children.

Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are small, full of personality, and they are imminently entertaining. These little ones are popular companion dogs that are loyal (sometimes fiercely), playful, and famously adorable. They’re also known to amp up the cuteness to get what they want!

Toy Fox Terrier

Toy Fox Terriers love attention! They do best with people who can spend a significant amount of time with them daily. Toy Fox Terriers began as ratters but the breed has transitioned into loving and entertaining companions that are perfect for families with older children and other pets.

Brittany Spaniel

Brittany Spaniels are highly energetic throughout their lives! Brittanys are happy, elegant gundogs who are described as hyperactive and as the perfect family friend. Like most sporting breeds, their energy is combined with other qualities, such as loyalty, intelligence, and affection, that can make them a good fit for the right home.

Vizslas

Vizslas are the quintessential people dogs. Also affectionately called “Velcro dogs,” these guys need to be around their people all the time or they can become depressed. Conversely, when they are working side-by-side with their people and getting plenty of exercise, they thrive! They live for fieldwork, agility drills, and advanced obedience training.

Maltese

Malteses are energetic, magnetic, and playful. They’re also similar to Bichons in that they basically look like tiny stuffed animals. That being said, they’re not toys. Malteses make wonderful companions!

Newfoundland

Did you know “Nana” in Peter Pan is based on a Newfoundland dog? Despite their considerable size, these dogs are generally docile and can happily adjust to living in the house. They’re watchful, trustworthy, and tolerant of the behavior of children.

Cane Corso

Cane Corsos are best described as dignified. Though they start as adorable little puppies like any dog, they eventually grow into large adults–they can easily reach 110 pounds! These dogs are highly intelligent, alert, and you can count on them to keep a watchful eye over your family. Teaching them basic skills early on will help ensure these guys are successful in adulthood.

Bassett hound

Bassett Hounds make wonderful family dogs! They get along with just about everybody: children, adults, dogs, and other animals. Because they’re so pack-oriented, they can suffer from loneliness. If you’re considering one Basset Hound, you might want to think about acquiring two.

West Highland White Terrier

West Highland White Terriers, also known as “Westies,” are brought to us from the Highlands of Scotland and they’ve been charming us for over 300 years! These smart, confident little dogs are entertaining at play, diminutive but sturdy, and among the most popular of the small terriers.

Chow Chow

Did you know, Sigmund Freud had a Chow Chow named Jofi who sat in on many of his sessions with children? He found Jofi’s soft coat and gentle presence to be comforting to his patients.

Chow Chows are aloof with strangers but eternally loyal to loved ones. They’re also dignified and serious-minded, which can lead people to misunderstand these guys. When they’re well socialized they remain refined and dignified throughout their lives.

Belgian Malinois

Did you know Belgium Malinois dogs were working with the New York City police force as early as 1908? Often confused with German Shepherds, they are intelligent and very active dogs that excel at many tasks. In addition to police work and herding, they also do well with search and rescue, and in performance events, such as agility.
